Why Give to the Shiawassee United Way?
The Shiawassee United Way, like other United Ways, serves as an “umbrella” organization for community non-profits which often leads to the question, “Why give to the Shiawassee United Way, rather than directly to the agency?” Retta Parsons, newly appointed Shiawassee United Way Director answered by saying, “Our main goal is to ambitiously raise funds and then distribute them, through a grants process, to other non-profit organizations in Shiawassee County. This frees the professionals in the not for profit organizations to do what they do best—deliver services to the community members that they serve.”
Shiawassee United Way staff spends the year networking in the community to raise funds and ensure that funds are being handled by well-run non-profit agencies. Programs funded by Shiawassee United Way donations must demonstrate measurable results. Site visits are made to ensure that services are actually delivered in the community. “This comprehensive approach ensures agency accountability to Shiawassee United Way and assures that contributions—you’re hard earned dollars—are well spent and spent locally,” explained Retta.
The Shiawassee United Way is a partner in the Non-Profit Capacity Building program. This is a collaborative effort between the Shiawassee United Way and the Cook Family Foundation. This forward-thinking program assists non-profits to learn how their agencies can effectively serve community members for years to come. Non-profit executives, staff, and board members are invited to professional development training opportunities and may elect to undergo intensive organizational analysis. This beneficial, progressive program is able to exist, in part, because of generous donations during the annual campaign of the Shiawassee United Way.
Also, please give generously during the Shiawassee United Way annual campaign between October 2 and October 31. You may send your donation to Shiawassee United Way, P. O. Box 664, Owosso 48867.
